How to Use Grok: A Founder's Guide to Research, Content and Trends
Most founders we talk to have tried one AI assistant, liked it, and stopped there. That's fair. You're busy. But each assistant has its own strengths, and Grok has one that's hard to match: it can see what's happening right now on X and the web.
If your business depends on knowing what your customers are talking about this week, that matters. This guide covers where to find Grok, what the plans include, the features worth your time, and how to ask for what you need.
What is Grok?
Grok is an AI assistant you can chat with, talk to, and hand files to. It can answer questions, search the web and X live, write drafts, read your documents, and make images and short videos. It comes from the same company that runs X.
Where to use Grok
You can use Grok in three places, and your chats stay in sync across them when you sign in with the same account:
- On the web at grok.com. This is the fullest version. Use it in Chrome or another Chromium browser. Grok's own help page notes that some features, like Projects, may be missing if you use a different web address.
- In the Grok app for iPhone and Android. Good for voice chats and quick questions on the go.
- Inside X, in the Grok tab. Handy when you're already reading posts and want context on a trend or a thread.
What the plans cost (as of October 2026)
In October 2026 the company rolled out a new plan called The X Subscription. It bundles Grok, X Premium features and a few other tools into one bill. New customers choose from these monthly prices:
- Free: $0, with limited chat.
- Plus: $8, with more usage plus Grok chat, voice, image and video creation (Imagine), and Build.
- Premium: $30, with about four times the usage of Plus, the latest Grok models, faster replies and Grok Bot.
- Super: $100, with about 15 times the usage of Plus and priority access at busy times.
- Ultra: $200, with about 50 times the usage of Plus.
Annual billing is a bit cheaper. If you already pay for an older plan like SuperGrok, you can keep it. Switching is optional. Prices change, so check x.ai/pricing before you buy.
Our advice: start free. Move up only when you hit the limits on work that's actually paying off.
The features that matter most for founders
1. Live search of the web and X
This is Grok's standout feature. When you ask about something current, Grok searches the web and X in real time and shows you where its answers came from. You can then ask follow-up questions to dig deeper.
How a founder uses it: "What are small fitness studio owners on X saying about rising rent this month? Give me the top five themes and link the posts." In a few minutes you have a read on your market that would have taken an afternoon of scrolling.
Always click the sources before you repeat anything. Live posts move fast, and some are wrong.
2. Research and deeper reasoning
For harder questions, Grok can think step by step and show its reasoning so you can follow along. Paid plans also offer a multi-agent mode, where several agents work on parts of a big question at the same time and combine their findings into one answer with sources.
How a founder uses it: comparing three vendors, sizing up a new market, or getting a quick, cited summary of a law or rule change that affects your industry.
3. Files and documents
You can upload PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets, slide decks, images, audio and more. On the web you can attach many files at once. Grok can summarize them, pull out numbers and quotes, compare two documents, or spot trends in a spreadsheet.
How a founder uses it: "Here are last quarter's sales and this quarter's. What changed, and what three questions should I ask my team?" Or upload a contract and ask it to list every date and dollar amount.
A tip from Grok's own help page: for long PDFs, point to specific page numbers.
4. Content and writing
Grok writes first drafts of emails, posts, scripts and articles. There's also a Canvas space for longer pieces, where you can edit with suggestions in place.
How a founder uses it: turning one customer story into a LinkedIn post, three short X posts and an email. Then you edit it so it sounds like you. Never post a draft you haven't read.
5. Images and video with Grok Imagine
Grok Imagine makes images and short videos from a text description or a reference photo. You can keep editing with follow-up requests in the same chat. Videos run up to 15 seconds.
How a founder uses it: quick concept images for a campaign, a mood board for your designer, or a simple visual for a social post. For your brand's final assets, have a person review them first.
6. Voice
You can talk with Grok out loud, with natural back-and-forth and quick replies. It's useful for thinking out loud on a walk or in the car.
How a founder uses it: talking through a tough decision, rehearsing a sales call, or dictating a rough outline you'll clean up later.
7. Projects, memory and custom instructions
- Projects keep related chats and files in one workspace. Make one per client, launch or campaign so you don't have to re-upload the same files every time.
- Memory lets Grok remember your preferences and earlier chats. You can manage or turn it off in your settings.
- Custom instructions tell Grok how you want answers, every time. For example: "I run a boutique fitness studio. Write in plain, warm language. Keep answers short unless I ask for more."
8. Connectors
Connectors let Grok look at your other tools from inside a chat. The built-in list includes Gmail and Google Calendar, Google Drive, OneDrive, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint and Salesforce. You set them up at grok.com/connectors and sign in once.
How a founder uses it: "What's on my calendar this week, and which meetings need prep?" Only connect accounts you're comfortable letting an AI read.
9. Build and Grok Bot (for when you're ready)
Two newer tools go beyond chat. Grok Build lets you describe a simple app, dashboard or web page and builds a working version in the chat. Grok Bot gives you AI teammates that take on longer tasks on their own computer in the cloud. It's included on Premium and higher. Most founders won't need these on day one, but they're worth knowing about as you grow.
How to write prompts that get good answers
You don't need special tricks. You need to brief Grok the way you'd brief a sharp new assistant.
- Give context first. Who you are, who your customer is and what the result is for. "I own a med spa in Santa Barbara. I'm writing to past clients who haven't booked in six months."
- Say exactly what you want back. "Give me three subject lines and one 120-word email." Format and length matter.
- Ask for sources on anything current. "Use posts and articles from the last 7 days and link each one."
- Share an example. Paste a post or email you love and say "match this tone."
- Set limits. "Plain language, no jargon, no buzzwords. If you're not sure, say so."
- Keep the conversation going. The first answer is a draft. Reply with "shorter," "more specific," or "give me two other angles."
- Check the facts. Grok can be wrong, especially about fast-moving news. Verify numbers, names and quotes before you publish or decide.
Five founder prompts to try this week
- Trend check: "What are people on X saying about [your industry] this week? Group it into themes, and link two posts for each."
- Customer research: "What questions do people ask before buying [your product]? List 15 in their words."
- Content batch: "Turn this customer story into one LinkedIn post, three X posts and a short email. Keep my voice: [paste a sample]."
- Brainstorm: "Give me ten offer ideas for [customer] in [season]. Rank them by how fast they could bring in revenue."
- Document review: "Summarize this file in five bullets, then list anything that needs my decision."
