Paper sculpture of a layered profile with fine lines converging on one green sphere, representing strategic clarity

Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business when people ask?

    Short answer

Because the AI cannot read your business as one clear, trusted entity. Brands split across domains with little structured data look like several strangers. Write one bio, put that exact bio on every property you own, and link those profiles to each other so AI reads them as one company.

This week I ran a search on behalf of a client, the kind I rarely see founders run on themselves. I asked an AI assistant, "Who are the best people doing this work in this field?" Their name did not come up. Not in the first answer, not in the third. The company is real, ranks fine on Google, has paying customers. To the machine, it was invisible.

    How is search changing?

Your next customer may never load your website. They will ask one AI assistant a question and trust the single answer it reads back.

For twenty years search handed you a page of links and let you choose. Now a growing number of people, plenty of them founders over 45, ask one assistant and act on the single answer it reads back.

That changes what it takes to be found. Google hands you ten links and lets you pick. An AI assistant hands you one name and moves on. If it cannot tell who you are, you are not that name.

Why can't the AI see a real business?

An AI can only recommend a business it can read as one clear, trusted entity. Plenty of sites are not built that way. The brand is split across several domains, the pages carry almost no structured data, and the machine cannot tell that all of it is the same company.

The people asking AI "who should I hire" are already deciding based on what comes back. If your business cannot be parsed, you are not in the running, no matter how good the work is.

How do you decide which fix comes first?

So I built two things. One, an audit that scores how visible a brand actually is to AI search. Two, a tracker that ranks every fix by a single number: Impact times Confidence, divided by Effort. Highest score, do it first.

The cheapest high-impact fix is almost always identical. Write one bio. Put that exact bio on every property you own (your site, LinkedIn, directories, press pages). Then link those profiles to each other so the AI reads scattered pages as one entity instead of five strangers who happen to share a name.

That fix costs an afternoon of copying and pasting. It also gives every later fix something to build on, because structured data and directory listings work better when they all describe the same entity in the same words.

    Do this today

    Ten minutes, one browser tab.

    1. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask "who are the top [your category] in [your city]" three different ways.
    2. Write down whether you appear and who does instead.

That short list is your baseline and your competitor map in one sitting.

    Meredith's rule

An AI can't recommend a business it can't read.

    Questions

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Make your business readable as one entity. Use one identical bio across your website, LinkedIn, directories, and press pages, link those profiles to each other, and add structured data to your site. Then check by asking the assistant who leads your category in your city.

How do I check if AI search tools know my company exists?

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask who the top providers in your category and city are, phrased three different ways. Note whether you appear and who shows up instead. That list becomes your baseline and a map of the competitors AI already recommends.

Which AI search visibility fix should I do first?

Score each fix by Impact times Confidence, divided by Effort, and start with the highest number. The cheapest high-impact fix is usually a single consistent bio placed on every property you own, with each profile linking to the others.
